How Fuel Surcharges Work
A fuel surcharge (FSC) is an extra charge added to freight rates to account for fluctuating diesel prices. It protects both carriers and brokers from fuel price volatility.
The Formula
FSC per mile = (Current diesel − Base diesel) ÷ MPG
Total FSC = FSC per mile × Trip miles
Base diesel price — the reference price set in your contract. The most common industry standard is $1.20/gal, though this varies by agreement.
Current diesel price — typically the DOE/EIA national or regional average from the most recent Monday publication.
MPG — your truck's fuel efficiency. Industry average for class 8 trucks is 5.5–6.5 MPG. Lower MPG = higher surcharge per mile.
Diesel prices sourced from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). EIA publishes weekly every Monday. Actual pump prices vary by location. Fuel surcharge calculations are for estimation purposes — always refer to your specific contract terms for the applicable formula and base price.
