Satisfactory Safety Rating

The carrier has adequate safety management controls in place to meet the safety fitness standard.

    What Does “Satisfactory” Mean?

A Satisfactory rating is the highest rating FMCSA assigns through its Compliance Review process. It indicates that the carrier has demonstrated adequate safety management controls across all areas evaluated — driver qualification, hours of service, vehicle maintenance, accident tracking, and hazardous materials (if applicable).

    Key Points

    • The carrier passed an FMCSA Compliance Review
    • Safety management systems meet federal standards
    • Driver qualification files are properly maintained
    • Vehicle maintenance programs are adequate
    • Hours of service compliance is acceptable
    • The rating remains valid until FMCSA conducts another review

    Guidance for Brokers & Shippers

A Satisfactory rating is a positive signal, but it's not the only thing you should check. The rating may have been assigned years ago — verify that current CSA/SMS scores haven't deteriorated since the last review. Always confirm insurance and authority status are current.
